The creative teams behind ABS-CBN's top-rating teleseryes, the successor to the legendary Ernie Baron and a former security guard who worked her way through the ranks to become a true-blue Kapamilya are just some of the awardees in the 2009 Walk on Water (WOW) Awards: ABS-CBN Special Recognition Program.
In her speech at ABS-CBN's Dolphy Theater, ABS-CBN President and COO Charo Santos-Concio praised the WOW Awards nominees for displaying extraordinary creativity in their craft while staying true to the core values of the company.
ABS-CBN Chairman and CEO Eugenio "Gabby" Lopez III said the WOW awardees deserve recognition for excelling in their respective fields in an "ocean of work." He also reminded the group to remain fleet-footed and nimble to stay ahead of the competition.
ABS-CBN TV Productions, the creative force behind megahit teleseryes such as "Lobo," "May Bukas Pa," and "Tayong Dalawa," won the WOW Award-Team Category for exhibiting the highest level of excellence in TV programming and steering the company to the top of primetime TV ratings nationwide.
In the Individual Category, TV Anchor Kim Atienza was cited for being the driving force behind the reality adventure travel show "Matanglawin."
"The best decision I made in life is turning my back on politics and joining ABS-CBN. The hardest thing I ever did was to tell my dad, 'Ayaw kitang palitan. Gusto ko palitan si Ernie Baron,'" Atienza said in his acceptance speech.
The success story of Gilda Lacusong, the winner of the WOW Awards Unsung Hero Category, was especially moving. Lacusong first joined the company in 1986 as a security guard. When she finished her studies, she applied for a regular job in ABS-CBN and has since become a regular fixture of ABS-CBN's On-Air Operations.
ABS-CBN Manila Radio Division Head Peter Musngi gave Lacusong profuse praise during the awarding. "I've never seen her frowning. She's always ready to help other people. If I had more people like her, we could achieve so much more," he said.
ABS-CBN's Boto Mo, i-Patrol Mo promotional campaign for the 2007 mid-term election won the WOW Award Creative Breakthrough Category for pioneering citizen journalism in the country.
The Ces Drilon Response Team and the When Truth Hurts a Giant-RNG team won Special Citations in the WOW Team Category for exemplifying teamwork and service during the Ces Drilon kidnap incident in 2008 and the ratings manipulation scandal involving AGB Nielsen Philippines in 2007.
Cameraman Jimmy Encarnacion also won a Special Citation in the Individual Category for exhibiting the highest level of excellence during the Ces Drilon kidnapping.
The WOW Awards committee also gave a Special Posthumous Award to the family of the late TV Director Gilbert Perez.
